Toby Middlemist is a speaker on leadership, politics, and civic engagement, with a particular focus on how young people understand and participate in contemporary democracy. Based in Wales, his work explores the relationship between political institutions and public trust, and how a new generation can be meaningfully engaged in civic life.
He has spoken to thousands of young people during his campaign for the Youth Senedd, where he addressed political participation and helped mobilise hundreds of first-time voters. His ability to communicate complex political ideas with clarity and conviction led to his invitation to deliver a keynote speech at the Seren Academy’s 10th Anniversary, where his address was subsequently requested by the Welsh Minister for Education.
Alongside his political engagement, Toby brings a broad intellectual perspective shaped by his achievements in both philately and ornithology. Named British Young Philatelist of the Year, he was invited to meet Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his work. As a finalist in the Martin Garner British Young Ornithologist of the Year, he has also spoken at the Pembrokeshire Ornithological Conference, reflecting his wider interest in the relationship between environment, community, and identity.
Through his speaking, Toby aims to contribute to a more thoughtful, informed, and engaged political culture, grounded in democratic principles and driven by a commitment to long-term societal improvement.
He will begin studying History at University College London in September 2026.
